The first meeting of the LUV Social Media Working Group. This is for programmers and sysadmins who want to work on implementing FOSS social media technologies for the use of LUV members.

There are many reasons for wanting to avoid the commercial social media sites, but to do so we need viable alternatives. The aim of this group is to implement some of the alternatives and see if we can get them to a stage where they are useful. We will document what we do and make public instances of things that we determine to be worth using.

LUV hosted an online training session on BTRFS and ZFS. The session started with Russell Coker giving a short introduction to BTRFS and ZFS.

This was followed by a hands-on session, with the participants given a choice of either practising it on their own VM (needs Debian/Buster with 3 empty block devices), or practising on a VM that we hosted. Those who wanted to use one that we hosted would need to email Russell their ssh public key privately so Russell could set it up for them.

  • Lib-Ray is a project to create an alternative to DVD and Blu-Ray for fixed-format releases, using only free-licensed software and open formats, without encryption or region-coding.
  • Lunatics! is an original animated science-fiction story about the first permanent settlers on the Moon. This is an independent, free-culture, open-movie production, made with open-source software, especially Blender. Regular updates and support are through Patreon.

Andrew Pam is the past president and current treasurer of Linux Users of Victoria. Andrew and his partner Dr. Katherine Phelps ran an animation fan club for many years. Andrew is a supporter and render server provider for Terry Hancock's “Lunatics!” FOSS animated TV series project.

There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so there is time for people to have lunch nearby.
